Professional skills courses

Introduction

Key terms: personal development, resilience, value-based decision-making, strengths-based development, navigating academic challenges by using your inner compass, relevant for students in any phase of the PhD trajectory

ECTS: 2.5
Number of sessions: 4
Hours per session: 4

In this training, you will explore how to make authentic choices that help you stay true to yourself in the short and long term and that help you showcase your personal power. You will do this by examining how you connect with yourself, with others and with your professional environment.

Why do we offer this training? A PhD programme is not something you take up lightly. You invest a great deal of your time and energy over several years of your life. You find yourself in a sometimes challenging (new) dynamic. You are busy meeting deadlines. Much is expected of you. In short: you face plenty of challenges.

Especially in such a challenging environment, it is useful to consciously pause for a moment and reflect on who you are and where you are going, what holds you back and what moves you forward, and what you stand for and what you strive for.

Yet these insights are important ingredients for shaping your own inner compass. A compass you can fall back on when things get tough. And one that helps you recognize opportunities that help you grow both as a person and as a professional and capitalize on them.

Attendance at all sessions is required. There is no homework.

Who is this for?

There are no specific entry requirements for this course. All PhD students who want to learn how to make authentic choices that help them grow as professionals, both during and after their PhD, are welcome.

What will you achieve?

  • After this course, you will have direct access to your personal power, energy and joy. And a clear insight into your talents.
  • After this course, you will understand where (inner) resistance comes from and how to deal with it effectively.
  • After this course, you will be able to distinguish the signals your body gives you and better guard your boundaries.
  • After this course, you will have greater awareness of what matters to you most. That awareness helps you take more control over the things you want to contribute to. And to stand up for what you consider important.
  • After this course, you will be more able to make autonomous choices based on your own energy, joy and drives without losing the connection with your professional environment.

Relations with other courses

This course complements two other courses offered by the EGSH:

1.  Bounce back: handling the mental and emotional challenges of doing a PhD. Compared to Personal power, Bounce back has a stronger focus on coping with emotional and mental challenges, and pays less attention to the importance of a value-driven inner compass.

2. Intervision for PhD candidates: Peer support for resilient and sustainable academic work. This course facilitates discussion among peers about a wide range of challenges at work. Personal power is an instructor-led course that has a more narrow focus on one’s inner compass.

When we connect to what inspires us inside, something interesting happens. Our eyes start to sparkle, energy starts to flow and our communication becomes authentic and effortlessly effective. In my work I encourage people to connect to that inspiration and to find the confidence to show it in their work and life. Since 2010, I have been guiding individuals and teams within higher education, government and the private sector in their search for their talents, energy and authenticity. For instance, I provide in-depth (personal) leadership programs and training sessions in which people learn to tell their story, or that of their team, in an impactful way. And I coach professionals in finding their personal path by helping them to trust their creativity and intuition. I also guide people in designing and preparing business presentations.

Working with what’s already inside, rather than trying to be someone else is, in my opinion, the most powerful thing there is. When you stay close to what ignites your passion, your qualities and talents and what is truly important to you—joy, energy and a sense of ease naturally arise. I coach and encourage people to work with what makes them unique and to recognize its value. With a rich background in change communication in an environment with a lot of diversity, I understand how important connection is. It’s the foundation in all my trainings: connection with yourself (know yourself) and with others. When connection is present, energy can flow, communication becomes more effective and results are within reach, even in challenging situations. I provide training in personal development (f.e. personal leadership), presentation skills and storytelling. I mainly guide people in the research field and consider it important to contribute to societal issues.
