In addition to this document, check out the useful SIN-Online channel Bachelorscriptie Finance (translated: Bachelor thesis Finance) with profiles of thesis supervisors, writing hints, and useful links. The Bachelor thesis (henceforth thesis) is the final piece of your Bachelor programme and currently has a load of 8 ECTS, corresponding to a work load of 224 hours. If you work full-time on your thesis, the thesis will cover a time frame of approximately two months. This is just an average. Many factors influence the actual length of your thesis trajectory, for example the way you work (efficiency, effectiveness), additional activities, ambitions, computational/computer skills, knowledge about the topic, but also the availability of your supervisor, possible dependence on third parties (for instance because of data), and factors that are not related to your thesis such as family affairs. We recommend Bachelor students who intend to do the Master Programme Financial Economics to write their Bachelor thesis at the Finance Group, but this is not a formal requisite. Taking electives and one of the Bachelor seminars of the Finance Group or, even better, taking the Major Financial Economics and all our electives are also very useful preparations to your Master programme. (To prevent problems with statistics and statistical applications as a Master student, we strongly recommend the high-quality and accessible Ba3-course Financial Methods & Techniques.) If your Major is Financial Economics, it is not mandatory to also write your Bachelor thesis at the Finance Group. General requirements and options A Finance thesis usually consists of a theoretical and an empirical component. A thesis that is limited to a literature review only does normally not suffice, unless you are able to compensate the missing empirical component in deliberation with your supervisor by demonstrating your analytical skills in an extensive, in-depth and completely self-written (i.e., not based on existing surveys) review. There is no minimum requirement regarding the number of pages. In general, a brief and concise thesis is regarded as better than a thesis with a lot of woolly language and unnecessary discussions. Quality over quantity. Still, just to give you an idea: most Bachelor theses are between 25 and 50 pages of length. You write your thesis individually. In deliberation with your supervisor it is sometimes possible to explore a topic together with one or more fellow students. You can think of some joint meetings with your supervisor or cooperation during the data collection process. In the end, your thesis must be a document written by you alone. You have to write the thesis in Dutch or in English. The choice of language does not influence your grade, but abundance of grammar and spelling errors does have a negative influence on your final grade and will delay the supervision process. We recommend choosing the language in which you can express yourself best. Some supervisors only supervise theses written in English. Do not expect linguistic corrections from your supervisors. If you feel you need help, look for a useful language course, inside or outside the university. In particular, we would like to bring the Language & Training Centre (LTC, see HYPERLINK "http://www.eur.nl/english/ltc" www.eur.nl/english/ltc) at the EUR to your attention. This centre offers, for example, a course Academic Writing for Bachelor and Master Students (at a small cost). You will benefit from improvements in your writing skills for the rest of your life! You need to complete the first two years of the Bachelor programme before you can start with your thesis. There are no other pre-requirements. Nevertheless, we do recommend taking a Finance seminar first, because it will provide you with experience, knowledge, and ideas. We advise against staying abroad while working on your thesis. If you nevertheless choose to do so, you still have to write your thesis under the supervision of an Erasmus School of Economics lecturer. You will miss out on the personal conversations with your supervisor. Understand that you can impossibly expect extensive/thorough written reactions to your questions or to the work you hand in. In any case you have to be in the Netherlands for the final part of your thesis trajectory. For a good judgement of your performance, personal contact is crucial. Take into account the risk that imposed improvements of your thesis may take more time than expected after your return to the Netherlands. Optional: depending on your curriculum, it may be possible to combine writing your thesis with an internship. You can find more information about internships in the study guide. There are a few things that we want to emphasize here: i) finding an internship is your own responsibility; ii) work-experience internships do not qualify for credits and will not be supervised by a lecturer; iii) writing the Bachelor thesis occurs after the internship, not simultaneously; iv) you must notify your thesis supervisor about a related internship in advance; v) if the internship needs to be graded, assessment is based on an internship report written by you; vi) if you want to qualify for ECTS for the internship, the internship report can be part of your thesis, but the thesis is graded on the basis of the added value of the thesis relative to the internship report. Application and registration Once you have decided that you want to write your thesis at the Finance Group and once you have also decided at least approximately on the topic of your choice, then the following step is to find a thesis supervisor. You can find a supervisor in two different ways, namely by personally contacting the lecturer of your preference or by intermediation of the thesis coordinator. After a personal meeting or e-mail, the thesis coordinator can refer you to an eligible supervisor. Most potential supervisors will invite you for an intake meeting or ask you to prepare a thesis proposal first. Do not contact a lecturer way before you actually start writing your thesis; you are expected to immediately or almost immediately start working on your thesis after the first contact. Take note that the capacity of lecturers to supervise theses is limited, so it can well be that your preferred lecturer is not available. A lecturer can also be unavailable for other reasons, for example because of a long stay abroad. Take into account that a potential supervisor may require you to change your topic for a better fit with his/her area of expertise. After the intake meeting and after the lecturers approval to write your thesis under his/her supervision, you have to fill out and sign a registration form (Registration form thesis and internship for financial economics) at the secretariat of the Finance Group (H14-01). Do not forget this! You also have to sign the accompanying statement regarding distribution of the thesis, data and plagiarism. Note: registration is not without commitment. The registration form does not only serve the purpose of collecting personal information, it is also a written agreement between you and the thesis supervisor. Therefore, take a well-considered decision before you sign up. If you are forced to withdraw because of unforeseen circumstances, always inform your supervisor as well as the departments secretariat. Hint: through SIN-Online you can find a document in English with profiles of all thesis supervisors in the Finance Group. Most lecturers also have their own homepage with personal information. The Finance Group does not impose an application deadline or a deadline for handing in a proposal. Note, however, that we cannot guarantee the availability of a supervisor if you apply only at the end of an academic year. It is your own responsibility to take (for example) registration deadlines and requirements of your current and/or follow-on educational programme into account. Choice of subject and thesis proposal You are personally responsible for selecting a subject and a research question. It is wise to orientate yourself at an early stage, because it often takes quite some time to find a suitable subject and to get familiar with it. Hint: first choose a general area of interest and then define an interesting and workable research question within that area. General ideas about possible subjects can be generated during Finance seminars or Finance courses. It can also be very useful to search for subjects in course books or scholarly journals. Once you have found an interesting topic, define the scope of your research. The size of your thesis and the time that you can spend on it are constrained, so you have to make a decision about what problem you precisely want to study. Moreover, you can demonstrate your abilities best when you analyze one single problem. Theses with a broad subject often remain superficial, do not offer much added value, and the danger exists that much of your writing is no more than a reproduction of information from overview articles or hand books. A good research question is original, clear, workable, and has practical and scientific relevancy. Your thesis should have some innovative features, but this can for instance already be achieved with me too research: you replicate an existing study with either more, more recent or qualitatively better data, or for other countries. Most supervisors will ask you to write and hand in a research proposal in advance. Such a request especially serves to force yourself to think about your research question, the objective of your thesis and the methodology of your study. Thinking steps ahead can prevent future troubles. You may also try to think about the potential research results that could follow from your approach, enabling you to judge whether your methodological approach is truly fit to answer your research question. A research proposal is brief and to the point (1 or 2 A4 pages), with information about: research question; motivation for the particular research question; theoretical background; (examples of) relevant literature; research methodology; required data and sources that are available to obtain these data; preliminary outline: chapters and perhaps even paragraphs (this outline implicitly shows how you intend to answer your research question). If you wish you can also make a time plan and discuss that with your supervisor. Avoid vague statements in your proposal (and in your thesis, of course), be as concrete as possible. Philosophical elaborations are usually not appreciated. An important obstacle in empirical research is often the availability of data. The information that you want like to use may be difficult or impossible to obtain. It could be that your supervisor has a data set available, but this is not very likely. In most cases you will need to collect the data for your thesis yourself. Identify at an early stage that information that you need and assure yourself that all this information can really be obtained. Carefully estimate the amount of time that data collection will entail. Take into account that creating your own data set or enlarging existing data sets may take a lot of time (but is often worth it!). Thesis proposals are written under the supervision of the lecturer, not under the supervision of the coordinator or anyone else. A useful suggestion for those who are not familiar with the many data sources available in (or via) the University Library: enquire at the Erasmus Data Service Centre (EDSC). Website: HYPERLINK "http://www.eur.nl/edsc" http://www.eur.nl/edsc. The University Library provides access to many scientific financial databases. A list of the available data sources can be found on the website of the EDSC. A team of enthusiastic specialists at the EDSC gives individual and group (!) support to students, and organizes brief workshops where you learn about specific data sources. We strongly recommend taking these workshops before you start working with a particular database. Consider doing so even before you start thinking about your research question, so that you know what type of data you can get. You can sign up for these workshops online via the EDCS website. Thesis supervisors perform scientific research next to their educational activities. Sometimes it is possible to contribute to one of their research projects with your thesis. Ask your supervisor about such possibilities at an early stage if you like to do so. Handing in your final version and grading The decision to hand in your thesis is to be made in deliberation with your supervisor. There is no deadline for handing in, but you yourself should take into account (for example) the registration deadlines and requirements of your current and/or next educational programme. Mind that the lecturer will need time to read and evaluate your thesis, and that checking for plagiarism and processing your final grade will also take some time. You normally have to hand in at least one hard copy. You also need to provide your supervisor with a digital final version of your thesis (one single Word or Pdf document of the complete thesis, including the cover page). Use the following format for the name of the file: [Student_number] [ba or ma].*, for example: 123456ba.pdf. This document will be used for a (profound) plagiarism check and for archiving. Do not forget to include a summary (max. 1 A4) and a list with keywords (max. 5). The following aspects are mostly important factors for your grade: Structure, layout and care. Hypotheses are well-defined, there is a logical structure, the different chapters together form a coherent paper, sentences are well-constructed, the number of typing errors is restricted to a minimum, and the thesis has an appealing layout. Included are of course a title page, an index, an introduction, a conclusion, and an overview of the references. Tables, figures, appendices and pages are numbered. Accountability and correctness. Clear theoretical foundation, clear accountability and description of the research methodology, and clear description of data and literature sources. Reasoning, derivations and conclusions follow the rules of logic and are understandable. Added value, originality and efforts. Scientific and practical relevancy. The former means that the research contributes to the research area and can be a step up to follow-up research. Relevancy means that the findings are useful for, for example, companies, governmental institutions, regulation, and/or investors. From the thesis it must be obvious that you have shown a clear personal contribution, enthusiasm, and a creative way of thinking. In the end, the lecturer decides how the different criteria are weighed. There will be only one single final grade (one decimal), without any subdivision. The minimum passing grade for the Bachelor thesis is 5.5. Warning: copying text (or figures) is of course not allowed, unless you clearly indicate both the part of the text that is copied (for example using an italic font) and its source. Cases of suspected plagiarism are taken very seriously and will be presented to the Exam Committee. Concluding remarks Most supervisors will let you determine your own study pace. In most cases your supervisor will only contact you if he or she has not heard from you for a long time. We do however strongly advise you to work on your thesis intensively: this positively influences your motivation, mitigates restart costs, and even further increases the commitment of your supervisor. Sometimes it is also possible to write your Master thesis in the Master programme Financial Economics as a follow-up to your Bachelor thesis. Mind however that both theses must be stand-alone works, and each has to comply with the various requirements. Of course, the Master thesis will then be graded on the basis of its added value relative to the Bachelor thesis. If you have any questions regarding the process of writing a Bachelor thesis at the Finance Group, feel free to contact the coordinator. Her contact information can be found on the first page of this document. Last, but not least: do not consider the writing of a thesis as an obligatory burden, but regard it as a challenge and as an opportunity to work on a topic that really captivates you!
