Biography
Carinne Elion-Valter studied private law (orientation civil law notary law) at Leiden University. with a focus on corporate law, real estate and family law. After having worked in practice for about five years, she changed direction towards more theoretical topics centered around issues of legitimacy and belief in law and legal institutions as constructions of the imagination using insights from rhetorics, the history of ideas, Law and Literature and critical theory. Themes she dealt with are hope and utopian thinking, understandings of time and progress in liberal ideology, Tocqueville, social contract in corporate law theory and recently perceptions of AI. She regularly writes about the French 19th century author Victor Hugo, but also about modern French literature. Her approach is critical and hermeneutical, drawing on the phenomenological and hermeneutical tradition (Ricoeur, Marcel and others). She uses her research topics in het teaching activities, such as supervising BA thesis on law and emotion and MA theses on corporate law with a theoretical focus.
