prof.dr. H (Hanan) El Marroun

Biography

As an epidemiologist and neuroscientist, my research area focuses on sensitive periods of brain development (prenatal, the first 1000 days of life and adolescence). In population-based studies, I examine the short- and long-term consequences of maternal, fetal and child health on brain developmental features, including behaviour and cognition, as well as brain morphology and connectivity. One of my focus areas is substance use in pregnancy and adolescence. Next to my research, I also disseminate this knowledge and general research skills to bachelor and master students.

Childcare for all children: contributes to academic performance, but has limited impact on reducing socioeconomic inequalities

Childcare improves school performance but only slightly reduces socioeconomic inequality. Additional measures are needed.
      Children playing on a carpet

Childcare has a positive effect; children are less busy and less depressed.

Children experience less pressure and are less depressed if they go to daycare before age four.
