Biography

Vivian Hsueh Hua Chen is an Associate Professor of AI and Society (Sector Plan Humane AI) at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, ��Ů������ӰԺ��ҹ.  Her extensive career spans several prestigious institutions across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the United States. Dr. Chen specializes in the social and psychological impacts of digital communication technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), video games, Virtual Reality (VR), and social media. 

Dr. Chen’s research explores how these interactive digital technologies transform communication behaviors and shape both positive and negative individual psychological and social outcomes. She investigates how people negotiate identity and social relationships through interpersonal interactions in both real and virtual environments. Her work also examines the design of interactive media, including serious games, VR, and AI applications, to promote social, psychological, and learning benefits. Dr.

Dr. Chen has led and contributed to several interdisciplinary projects and has secured over €10 million in research funding. Her extensive publications cover topics such as AI bias, avatar and AI agent personalization, live streaming psychology, toxic behavior in online games, and the use of VR for empathy and stereotype reduction.

Her dedication to academic service includes roles as an Associate Editor for Emerging Media and Journal of Media Psychology, and formerly for Computers in Entertainment and Journal of International and Intercultural Communication. She has also served as Division Chair of the Game Studies Division for the International Communication Association (ICA).

n her teaching, Dr. Chen employs innovative methods such as in-class role-play simulations, VR simulations, and video games for experiential learning. She has developed and taught a wide array of courses on topics like Digital Games and Society, Artificial Intelligence and Social Design, and Intercultural Communication across multiple universities.

Dr. Chen is a sought-after speaker, having delivered keynote addresses on topics such as immersive technology for prosocial tendencies, virtual reality for positive impact, and the influence of interactive media. Her insights have also been featured in various media outlets.
