Any scientific research, whether conducted by bachelor students or professors, builds on the work of others. Referencing sources in your work is essential to acknowledge the contributions of others, demonstrate the foundation of the research, and ensure transparency and academic integrity.

Collecting the information you need to create the right references manually can be a lot of work. Tools, called reference managers, are available to make this easier. Examples of reference managers are RefWorks, EndNote, Zotero and Mendeley. These tools store bibliographic data such as title, name of author(s), year of publication, etc.

These programs are useful for:

• Retrieving references automatically
  You can manually add references to a reference manager, but also retrieve them directly (often in bulk) from many academic databases with a few simple mouse clicks.
• Maintaining an overview of found literature
  You can organize your references in folders, add keywords and other information, and sometimes also add (PDF) files.
• Adding in-text citations and creating a bibliography
  Reference managers help you create literature lists in reference styles (such as APA or Chicago) and often help you add in-text citations or footnotes. The reference manager automatically applies the rules of the different styles.

• RefWorks is an online tool. The references are stored on a server, so you can access them from any computer with an internet connection.
• Reference styles (such as APA and Chicago) are updated automatically.
• Many databases have a Direct Export function, which makes importing references into RefWorks easy.
• RefWorks can connect to your files in Word, Google Docs or Hangul via add-on RCM to add in-text references.
